The RIA’s certification programs feature global and Canadian-focused educational content. Educational requirements can be completed in less than two weeks. The courses are self-paced and entirely online.

Responsible Investment Advisor Certification (RIAC)

The Responsible Investment Advisor Certification (RIAC) is suitable for IIROC-licensed investment advisors and portfolio managers. The RIAC designation provides a global perspective on responsible investing.

There are two paths to earning the RIAC designation:

  1. Complete the PRI Academy’s RI Essentials course, with a score of 80% or higher, OR
  2. Complete Concordia’s SIPC program plus the Canadian RI Fundamentals course, with a score of 75% or higher.

For both paths, applicants must ensure the following:

  1. Candidate must be an RIA Member;
  2. Candidate must agree with the Statement of Purpose of the RIA, and be in good standing with any regulatory bodies that he or she is part of;
  3. After certification, candidates are required to complete 6 hours of continuing education (CE) activities on a biennial basis to ensure your expertise is current. 

CE Credits:

The RI Essentials course is eligible for 10 CE credit hours from the CFA Institute, IIROC, IAFE (“The Institute”), and FPSC.

The Canadian RI Fundamentals course is eligible for 5 CE credit hours from FPSC, IIROC, and IAFE (“The Institute”), as well as 5 PDUs from the CSF.

Pricing:

The RI Essentials course is priced at CAD $1,245, and RIA Members receive a 20% discounted rate of $996. The Canadian RI Fundamentals course is CAD $450, and RIA Members receive a discounted rate of $350. Group discounts are available.

Since you are required to be an RIA Member to qualify for certification, we recommend that you become an RIA Member before enrolling in your program so you receive the RIA Member discount. RIA Membership is $350 annually for advisors and other individuals. Learn more about RIA Membership here.

Responsible Investment Specialist (RIS)

The Responsible Investment Specialist (RIS) designation is suitable for mutual fund-licensed investment advisors and investment specialists. The RIS program provides learners with practical knowledge of Canada’s RI marketplace. It equips investment professionals with the knowledge they need to discuss environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues with Canadian retail clients, and the tools to offer advice about retail RI products in Canada.

How to Earn the RIS Designation:

  1. Pass the Canadian RI Fundamentals Course, with a score of 75% or higher; 
  2. Must agree with the Statement of Purpose of the RIA, and be in good standing with any regulatory bodies you are part of;
  3. After certification, you are required to complete a modest amount of continuing education (CE) activities on a biennial basis to ensure your expertise is current.

CE Credits:

The Canadian RI Fundamentals Course is eligible for 5 IIROC CE credits, 5 FPSC CE credits, 5 IAFE (“The Institute”) CE credits, and 5 CSF PDU credits.

Pricing:

The Canadian RI Fundamentals course is priced as follows: 

  • $450 each for Non-Members 
  • $350 each for RIA Members
  • $300 each for RIA Members (Group Rate 10+)
  • $250 each for RIA Members (Group Rate 25+)
  • $200 each for RIA Members (Group Rate 50+)

Responsible Investment Professional Certification (RIPC)

The Responsible Investment Professional Certification (RIPC) is suitable for a wide range of professionals such as consultants, analysts, lawyers, and others who work on issues related to responsible investing. The RIPC designation provides a global perspective on responsible investing.

There are two paths to earning the RIPC designation:

  1. Complete the PRI Academy’s RI Essentials course, with a score of 80% or higher, OR
  2. Complete Concordia’s SIPC program plus the Canadian RI Fundamentals course, with a score of 75% or higher.

For both paths, applicants must ensure the following:

  1. Candidate must be an RIA Member;
  2. Candidate must agree with the Statement of Purpose of the RIA, and be in good standing with any regulatory bodies that he or she is part of;

Applying for certification

Once you have successfully completed your educational requirements, fill out the appropriate application form and send it to staff@riacanada.ca.  Application forms are available below.

Continuing Education (CE)

After you have held your financial designation for one year, you are required to complete six hours of CE activities every two years. (i.e. No CE action will be required from you during the first year). You can choose from the following CE activities:

  • Webinars: Attend an RIA webinar or choose from the RIA’s library of webinars here;
  • Participate in the RIA Advisor conference calls;
  • Attend the RIA Conference;
  • Attend ESG AfterWork and other RIA educational events;
  • RIS recipients can take the RI Essentials course and apply it towards their CE requirements;
  • RIAC or RIPC recipients can take the Canadian RI Fundamentals course and apply it towards their CE requirements;
  • RI week events;
  • Other RI events and activities subject to the approval of the RIA.
