I have been part of the wonderful team at GFM Groupe Financier since it was created in 1996. At GFM Groupe Financier, we aim to be the leading independent financial services firm in Eastern Canada by focusing on our expertise and know-how, our attentiveness and understanding of our clients’ needs, and quality of life in business.
The firm’s values—integrity, proficiency, collaboration, and family—inform our interactions with clients and colleagues. Our clients are front and centre in our activities, and we implement solutions in line with their financial situation, their needs, and their goals. GFM has a Sustainable Development Policy to wich all each members subcribe.
In this regard, it’s important that our clients be able to invest in companies that uphold values of social responsibility and sustainability. As a Financial Planner (IQPF) and member of the Ordre des Administrateurs Agréés du Québec (Adm.A,), I want my clients to succeed and I believe that responsible investment contributes positively to financial performance as well as enhancing civic engagement.
I do my part by getting involved on a volunteer basis with various community organizations that are close to my heart: Cité de l’Or mining museum, Val-d’Or Hospital foundation, our regional sports and recreation organization, Val-d’Or Chamber of Commerce, the City of Val-d’Or’s 75th anniversary, the Val-d’Or Foreurs hockey team, and, more recently, a wine fair to benefit the local centre for advanced studies. I also contribute to my community’s vitality by providing financial support to youth outreach initiatives and projects to promote physical activity.

I believe that my team’s ability to help clients effectively manage their wealth is directly related to how they live, grow and work towards their dreams. The technical skills and talent that we bring to the table are important. But wealth management goes beyond that.
We start with listening, in order to properly understand our clients’ needs. We then work with them to tailor an effective strategy that balances capital preservation and income growth. But we also take into consideration intangibles, such as life experience, thinking outside the box, and taking environmental and social responsibility into account.
Once we’ve taken the time to get to know each other, then it’s time to drill down to develop, commit to and implement a strategy. At that point, things like economics forecasts, asset allocation ideas and tax efficient investing become more important. Growing, managing and transferring wealth to the next generation is a life-long project.
Let’s get started.
Ian is a Portfolio Manager, Director, and Vice President of Odlum Brown Limited, and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. He has a strong interest in the impact of ESG issues on corporate strategy and valuation. He contributed to the review of CFA Institute’s ESG Disclosure Standards and the development of the new Climate Investing Certificate. He also holds CFA Institute’s Certificate in ESG Investing.
As a practitioner Ian integrates ESG considerations into his work with clients. In his 2024 Oxford PhD thesis he examined institutional proxy voting on ESG-oriented shareholder proposals to develop a ‘modern proxy theory’ to improve global ESG outcomes. Ian also combines his practical and academic experience in a UK-based social venture – OxProx – that aims to improve transparency and accountability of proxy voting globally.
Ian holds undergraduate degrees from UBC and graduate degrees from Dalhousie and Carleton universities, as well as a post-graduate diploma from the University of Oxford. He is a longstanding community volunteer and is a past board chair of the Responsible Investment Association, the UBC Foundation, the UBC Alumni Association, and CFA Society Vancouver.
